The United States is the spiritual home of modern triathlon. From the original Hawaii race to the world's largest Olympic-distance event in Chicago, the country hosts some of the most prestigious and historic races on earth. Here are the events every American triathlete should know — and many will dream of racing.
IRONMAN World Championship — Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
The benchmark against which all triathlons are measured. Since 1978, the lava fields of the Kohala Coast have defined what it means to push human limits. 3.8km swim, 180km bike across volcanic terrain in 35°C heat, 42.2km run. Qualification required — but dreamable from your first race. The most iconic finish line in sport.
IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship — St. George, Utah
St. George has hosted the 70.3 World Championship multiple times and established itself as one of the toughest half-distance courses in the world. The red rock landscapes are spectacular. The climbing on the bike is relentless. The run in the heat is character-defining. A world-class race in a visually stunning setting.
Chicago Triathlon — Chicago, Illinois
The world's largest triathlon, with over 9,000 participants annually. Set against the iconic Lake Michigan waterfront and the Chicago skyline, the race offers Sprint, Olympic, and SuperSprint distances, making it accessible for first-timers and veterans alike. The city energy of race morning on Lake Shore Drive is unlike any other triathlon in the country.
New York City Triathlon — New York, New York
Swimming the Hudson River, cycling through the Bronx and back, running Central Park — the NYC Triathlon is one of the most dramatic urban race experiences in the world. The logistics are complex, the crowds are enormous, and finishing in Central Park with the Manhattan skyline behind you is worth every metre of suffering.
IRONMAN Arizona — Tempe, Arizona
One of the fastest full-distance IRONMAN courses in North America and historically one of the most sought-after Kona qualifying races. The flat bike course, consistent weather, and iconic swim finish make IRONMAN Arizona a favourite for athletes chasing personal bests and qualification slots. Held in November, it often closes the North American season with a bang.
IRONMAN Lake Placid — Lake Placid, New York
One of the oldest and most beloved IRONMAN events in the US. Set in the Adirondacks amid stunning mountain scenery, Lake Placid is known for a challenging hilly bike course, a legendary run finish through the village, and an atmosphere that brings thousands of spectators out to cheer athletes through the night. A bucket-list race for many American triathletes.
IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside — Oceanside, California
The traditional season-opener for professional and age-group triathletes on the West Coast. Set on the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, the race features a harbour swim, a scenic coastal bike, and a flat beachside run. The early-season timing, professional field, and California atmosphere make Oceanside one of the most anticipated 70.3 events of the year.
IRONMAN Wisconsin — Madison, Wisconsin
Known for its incredible crowd support and the legendary "hills loop" on the bike course. Madison transforms into a triathlon city on race weekend — spectators line every kilometre of the run, the university campus provides a stunning backdrop, and the finish on State Street is one of the loudest in IRONMAN. A fan favourite, year after year.
